Climate change is a real issue and many of us are concerned about the impact of carbon dioxide pollution. Thankfully, scientists have been studying this for decades.

Carbon dioxide is a natural gas that is released from the earth’s crust and oceans. As the earth warms, more of it escapes into the atmosphere.
However, extra carbon dioxide makes the Earth’s temperature rise even further. And the warmer the planet, the more carbon dioxide is trapped in the atmosphere…and so on.
Carbon dioxide is essential for human life. We breathe it out of our lungs, plants take it up through their leaves, and animals eat plants to get it. It cycles around the planet in a continuous loop, like a wheel going round and round forever.
But if you add more gas to this wheel, it starts to wobble. The wobble becomes bigger as more gas is added until eventually the whole wheel falls over and crashes to the ground.
This is what’s happening to our planet right now – too much carbon dioxide has been added to our atmosphere. And it is making our climate go haywire!
More carbon dioxide pollution means higher temperatures around the world. Yet it also helps to make plants grow faster. Which sounds good in theory but could have some unintended consequences.
For example, if plant growth gets out of control. And it might. It could be a problem for people who are allergic to pollen or other plant products. It’s also a major concern for farmers who rely on healthy crops to feed their animals and make money.
Plants also need nitrogen to grow, and they take it out of the soil. When they use up all available nitrogen, they die off. Then new plants can’t take over because there’s nothing left for them to grow on.
What Happens When The Amount Of CO2 Increases?
In a nutshell, it traps more heat! The greenhouse effect was obtained intuitively by the ancient Romans who used glass to bring light into their homes. It is also how greenhouses keep plants warm and grow year-round.
The atmosphere is made up of a variety of gases that surround the planet. This layer of air acts as a protective blanket, shielding the Earth from harmful rays from the sun.
The Earth’s atmosphere is composed largely of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). Carbon dioxide makes up only 0.04% of the atmosphere, but it has an outsize impact on life on Earth.
The reason for this is because CO2 absorbs energy in wavelengths that are invisible to human eyes. In fact, humans can’t physically see energy in these wavelengths at all.
This is why infrared cameras can be used to visualise someone’s body heat or a hot cup of coffee.
Carbon dioxide molecules vibrate when exposed to energy in these wavelengths, which causes them to generate some heat themselves. This process is called “absorption.” Some of this heat radiates back towards the Earth as infrared radiation.
So, as carbon dioxide increases in our atmosphere, more energy will be trapped by this greenhouse gas. This causes an increase in temperature at Earth’s surface and in its atmosphere.
The greenhouse effect is warming up our planet. It is caused by a blanket of greenhouse gases that traps heat in our lower atmosphere. And that’s making Earth much warmer than it would be without it.
Planting Trees Can Help Combat CO2 Pollution
Planting trees can help combat CO2 pollution. Say what? If that sounds like a broken record for you, don’t worry — it took me a minute to process it too.
It makes sense to do our part to reduce CO2 pollution from driving, using energy-efficient light bulbs, and recycling paper — but plant trees? How does that work?
When you think about minimising carbon dioxide emissions, you probably don’t think about planting trees as an effective measure. But it is.
Trees are nature’s best absorber of carbon dioxide pollution. They breathe in the CO2 while they are growing and store the carbon (the building block of CO2) in their wood to make themselves grow.
Why Is It Important To Plant Trees?
In short, trees are a critical component of our ecosystem. They remove CO2 from the atmosphere, provide oxygen to us and other living organisms, and soak up pollutants that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Planting trees is therefore a great step towards reducing air pollution and protecting the environment.
When the tree is harvested or falls (which happens in nature all the time), it releases that stored carbon back into the atmosphere. So, we end up with more CO2 than ever before. It’s a vicious cycle.

I’ve heard a lot of talk about how carbon dioxide pollution in the atmosphere is wreaking havoc on our planet. The oceans are absorbing more and more with arctic ice melting at an increased rate. But what can each of us do to help reduce CO2 emissions?

Buying fresh produce from your local farmer’s market or locally crafted goods will help reduce those emissions while supporting small businesses.
